Bedside table height and size

A bedside table works when its top is level with the top of the mattress, or within 5 cm above or below it. That way you reach a glass or your phone without sitting up.

Height

Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress. With a normal base and mattress you get 50–60 cm; with a storage base, 55–65 cm; with a low Japanese-style bed, 30–40 cm. Look for a table of that height.

Width and depth

40–50 cm wide holds a lamp, a book and a phone. If the space beside the bed is tight, a 30–35 cm table or a wall shelf frees the floor. The usual depth is 30 to 40 cm: more gets in the way when you get up.
