Desk dimensions: width, depth and height

Choose the width of a desk by what goes on it, the depth by the screen and the space behind by the chair. These are the sizes that work at home.

Width

  • 80–100 cm: a laptop and little else; fine for a corner or a child's room.
  • 120 cm: one monitor, keyboard and room for papers. The best-selling size.
  • 140–160 cm: two monitors, or one monitor and space to draw or write by hand.

Depth

Leave 50 to 70 cm between your eyes and the screen. A laptop needs 50 cm of depth, a monitor 60 cm, a large monitor or two 70–80 cm. A 40–45 cm deep desk fits in a hallway, but only works with a laptop.

Height and chair

The usual height is 72 to 76 cm. Leave at least 70 cm behind the desk to sit down and get up, and 90 cm if people walk behind you to another part of the room.
