Which TV unit for your screen size

Inches measure the diagonal of the screen, not its width. On a 16:9 TV the width in centimetres is the diagonal in inches times 2.2, plus 1–2 cm of bezel.

TV width and unit width

  • 32 inches: a TV of about 72 cm; unit 80–100 cm.
  • 43 inches: about 96 cm; unit 100–120 cm.
  • 50 inches: about 112 cm; unit 120–140 cm.
  • 55 inches: about 123 cm; unit 140–160 cm.
  • 65 inches: about 145 cm; unit 160–180 cm.
  • 75 inches: about 167 cm; unit 180–200 cm or more.

The unit should be at least 10–20 cm wider than the TV: it looks steadier and nobody knocks the screen. If the TV stands on feet at its ends, check that the distance between the feet fits on the top.

Depth and height

35–40 cm of depth holds the TV stand, a soundbar and a console. The centre of the screen should be at the eye level of someone sitting down, about 100–110 cm from the floor: with a 55-inch TV that means a unit 40–55 cm high.
