Which rug size for the living room, dining room and bedroom

A rug that is too small makes a room look smaller. The rule is simple: the main furniture rests on it, at least with its front legs.

Living room

With a three-seater sofa, 160 × 230 cm keeps the front legs on the rug. With a chaise longue or two facing sofas, 200 × 290 or 200 × 300 cm. Leave 30–60 cm of floor between the rug and the walls.

Dining room

Chairs should not drop off the edge when pulled out: add 60–70 cm on each side of the table. A 160 × 90 cm table needs a rug of about 290 × 220 cm; in practice, 200 × 300 cm.

Bedroom

The rug goes under the lower two thirds of the bed and shows 50–60 cm at the sides. For a 150 bed, 170 × 240 or 200 × 290 cm. With two rugs either side of the bed, 60 × 120 or 80 × 150 cm each.

Hallway

A runner leaves 10–15 cm of floor on each side: in a 100 cm hallway, one 80 cm wide.
